408 Stainless Steel

The 400 series encompasses martensitic grades with high carbon content that can be hardened using heat, but are otherwise poor in machinability and strength. One popular grade in this family is Type 410, more commonly referred to as Cutlery Grade stainless steel due to its lower 11% chromium and 8% nickel content, making it magnetic by default but alterable through additions like nickel, niobium tantalum or molybdenum additions.


409 Stainless Steel Sheet

420 Stainless Steel

420 Stainless Steel is a hardenable martensitic stainless steel grade that offers exceptional corrosion resistance and strength, often used for shear blades, surgical instruments, scissors, pump shafts and mine ladder rungs. Similar to grade 410 when in its annealed state but more resistant to chemicals and environments. Furthermore, both its hardened and tempered versions contain magnetism for increased useability. Cold drawn from its annealed state, 420 has excellent ductility and machinability for cold drawing operations, cold rolling to form shapes of all sizes and cold working tolerance are both limited due to its air hardening properties; welding should only be attempted after preheating with appropriate filler metal and pre-heating prior to welding; radical forming methods must be avoided as they cause cracking of the material.

AISI 434
